Orthodontics

Orthodontistry is a dental speciality that focuses on correcting the bite and straightness of teeth. Orthodontic is also referred to as dentofacial orthodontics. All orthodontists are dentists first. But orthodontists go through additional schooling to receive specialized training in orthodontics.

Specifically, orthodontists focus on the alignment of teeth as it pertains to misaligned teeth, crowded teeth, overbites and underbites. Orthodontists can also help with jaw problems and temporomandibular disorders (TMD).

There are multiple reasons that someone may seek orthodontic treatment. Some cases are simply aesthetic; the patient is looking for a more visually pleasing smile. Braces can greatly improve the way you look and feel, improving your confidence and self esteem.

Some people are in need of orthodontics to help their overall dental health. Regardless of your reason, the orthodontic team at Bellflower Dental Group is here to help.

Orthodontics work by putting constant pressure on the teeth in a controlled direction so that they slowly move into the desired position.

Don’t worry if metal braces aren’t for you - Orthodontic appliances are made of different materials. Some of those materials include metal, ceramic or plastic. This makes it easier for people of all ages to receive orthodontic treatment. Continue reading for more information on the different types of orthodontics that are available. The most traditional type of braces are metal brackets. They are adhered to the teeth and hold the teeth-moving wires in place.

Clear braces are a common alternative to metal braces. They are not as noticable and blend with your natural teeth. Similarly, ceramic braces match the color of your natural teeth and blend in, making them harder to see.

Lingual braces are braces that are fixed to the back of your teeth. Since they are behind the teeth they are nearly invisible. Lingual braces are good for people who have certain dental issues that don’t make them a candidate for invisalign, but don’t want noticeable metal brackets on their teeth.

Lingual braces usually cause a temporary lisp and are a little more uncomfortable than other forms of braces, but are still a viable aesthetic option in some cases.

Self-ligating braces are similar to conventional braces, but they don't use elastic, rubber bands or ties. They use little metal doors to hold the wires. The advantages to these types of braces is that they move quicker and they are sometimes easier to clean.

Some appliances are removable and some are bonded to the teeth. Clear removable orthodontic trays can be removed and cleaned and are virtually invisible.

Orthodontic treatments last between 6 months and three years. Treatment depends on a myriad of factors, including severity of the case, age and the method of treatment. Braces aren’t necessarily painful, but they do cause some discomfort when they are initially placed.

In addition to receiving orthodontic treatment, home/self care is very important. Orthodontic appliances must be cleaned and well maintained. Teeth must be brushed and regular dental visits are imperative.

Orthodontics are for anyone and any age, however, early treatment is always best. It is recommended that children visit the orthodontist at around age seven. Early treatment helps the orthodontist to correct and guide the growth of the teeth and jaw. They can create more space for teeth and avoid the need for teeth extractions. Additionally, orthodontists can help aid in the treatment of thumb/finger sucking and improve minor speech problems.

It’s not always easy for a patient to know whether or not orthodontic treatment is needed for themselves or their child. That is why the team at Bellflower Dental Group is here to help.
